PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The form and layout of the new building were dictated by the disposition of the existing buildings on the site and in particular for the existing hospital facilities to remain in use during the construction period. Construction materials were chosen to relate to and complement the existing stone walls. The building is designed to accommodate Acute Services at each of the three floor levels and is fully integrated into the existing hospital at each level. As part of the wider Design Team, Malone O’Regan played a key role in securing of planning permission for the development. In particular, the drainage discharges from the building and site needed careful consideration prior to agreement with Dungarvan Town Council. Malone O’Regan took the lead role in the identification, procurement, overseeing and reinstatement of opening up works to establish the nature and load carrying capacity of the existing structure We undertook noise surveys recommending mitigation measures as necessary and prepared a traffic management plan together with traffic calming measures for the main access. The capacities of the existing floors were assessed and upgrading works were designed to facilitate the upgrading works.

PROJECT COMPLEXITIES

The renovation element of the project consisted of the refurbishment of the main building which originally contained the school rooms and wards together with the Master’s and Matron’s apartments. The structural works included floors at the ground and first floor levels, the roof structure, window heads and localised masonry stabilisation and repair.
