PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Further to Malone O’Regan’s involvement in the construction of the original plant in the 1990s, we were engaged as Project Managers, Engineering Consultants and Cost Managers for the €59m upgrade in 2016. A state-of-the-art manufacturing line was delivered and assembled within the new building to allow Medite Smartply to develop a range of new cutting-edge OSB products. The 11,000m² extensions were primarily designed as long-span steel trusses to provide large clear spans to accommodate equipment, with insulated cladding to walls and roof. Auxiliary accommodation included a two-storey extension with first-floor office accommodation, constructed with loadbearing blockwork and concrete floors. Site works included new roads and yard areas, service ducts, alterations to the existing fire main and storm drainage etc.
PROJECT COMPLEXITIES
The process equipment required a large number of Specialist equipment foundations and the design of these required significant engagement with the suppliers, long in advance of equipment delivery. The large-scale nature of the equipment meant that a major secondary steelwork package was required to provide equipment supports, and accommodate high-level access platforms, complex stairs, and gangways.
