Extension to Emergency Department at Wexford General Hospital

Works have commenced on an extension to the Emergency Department at Wexford General Hospital. The development consists of two single storey extensions, one to the north and one to the west of the existing Emergency Department building.

The development is being fast tracked and delivered under Emergency Works Legislation in response to the Covid 19 Pandemic. The location of the extensions, existing site topography and co-ordination with existing services are just some of the items resolved by the design team during the short design stage. The structure consists of a reinforced concrete frame, concrete roof and load bearing blockwork walls.

The mechanical and electrical building services consists of heating, ventilation, medical gases, domestic water services, BMS, lighting, small power, fire alarm and CCTV. It is planned to fabricate a number of services off site minimising the construction duration.

The services have been designed to achieve construction in a high clean methodology, maximising infection control to the existing hospital and to ensure no interruption to hospital operations.

The design team is led by Wejchert Architects and Malone O’Regan are providing Civil, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering services in addition to Cost Management for the project. Malone O’Regan are delighted to assist the Health Service Executive in delivering another Emergency Works in response to the ongoing pandemic. Opening of the extension is planned for Spring 2021.
