FORENSIC SCIENCE LABORATORY ON SITE

The Main Contractor has been appointed and site establishment works have commenced for the new Forensic Science Laboratory at Backweston. The new laboratory will primarily be a new three-storey building with four wings that radiate from a central four-storey pinwheel. Each wing will provide a mixture of laboratory and office accommodation on the ground and first floors. The second-floor level will accommodate the plant required to service the laboratories below. The central core will provide all the shared communal facilities including double height public and staff entrances, the library, meeting rooms, board room and dining facilities. This core block is designed as an atrium space with natural ventilation and smoke extraction in the event of a fire. A single storey L-shaped block accommodates the ancillary services including boiler, electrical substation, and gas stores. The total development has a floor area of 14,585 m2. Malone O’Regan are retained as Civil & structural Engineer on the €65m building which will provide the State with a state-of-the-art forensics facility to the highest international standards in the battle against crime.
